The Ford Freestyle has been referred to as a Ford 500 with a much larger trunk. It is true that the two cars use a modified version of Volvo's P2 platform (XC90 SUV and S80 Sedan) as their base. Barrowing the chassis from the Ford owned the Swedish carmaker allows the former the luxury of both front and all wheel-drive configurations. The AWD system used on the Freestyle is also from Volvo's parts bin, using a Haldex differential in the rear, which can deliver power in 50 milliseconds when front wheel slip is detected. Combined with standard traction control, the system is designed to give one comfort in all inclement weather conditions. Conversely, the Freestyle can be had in a Forward Drive (FWD) configuration with Traction Control.
