2005 Ford GT Review - ForbesAutos.com
What you might already know is that the GT is a redo of the 1960s GT40, a classic Le Mans racer that saw limited street production. But what Ford talked up over the weekend was much more detailed than that. Why? Why reveal facts about a car that isn't debuting for 10 months? And so between this summer - when the 2004 F-150 begins to roll off the line - and next winter, Ford will be doing all it can to hype itself and its new toys. And no toy will be more worthy of lust than the roughly $150,000 GT.

2005 Ford GT Pictures and Specifications
It was in France, in the mid-1960s, that the great American supercar came to life. A low-slung, muscular racing car built to win on the legendary Le Mans race circuit, the Ford GT project was spearheaded by no less a powerhouse than company Chairman and CEO Henry Ford II. His goal was to change performance car history. And he did. The Ford GT is the ultimate Living Legend, explains J Mays, Ford vice president of design. Its a true supercar with appeal equal to that of the greatest sports cars in the world but with the addition of a heritage no one can match. Although the production car and the original race car both share the mystique of the Ford GT name, they do not share a single dimension. The new car is more than 18 inches longer and stands nearly 4 inches taller.

Car Review: 2005 Ford GT
Finally, just before it was time to go home, it was time to get into the GT. A little background is in order. In the early 1960s, Enzo Ferrari, in need of financing for his various racing teams, had some apparently-serious talks with Ford regarding Ford buying Ferrari. Or maybe he was just playing with the Americans, because the deal fell through at the last minute. Ford embarked upon development of a car to compete in European-style endurance racing, with the goal of winning the prestigious 24 Hours race held at LeMans, France, which was essentially a Ferrari benefit in the early 1960s. The car was the GT40, so-called because of its height - 40 inches - and the fact that it ran in the GT Prototype class. It took a couple of years of expensive and frustrating development, but Ford finally met its goal in 1966. Although its proportions are close to those of the GT40, the GT is 18 inches longer, and four inches higher. It has a space frame made of aluminum extrusions, castings, and stampings, and is made for use on the street- and the odd track day or time trial.

Ford GT Preview
The prototype Ford GT has received great reviews and press from the thousands who've seen it in person at various high-profile auto shows, and as a result, Ford has indicated that the GT will see production as a 2003 model.

2003 Ford GT - Motor Trend
You wouldn't know it from the oddly proportioned fiberglass-bodied mules, with their goofy multispoke wheels and mock racing decals, but Ford appears to be doing it right, as GT product development and engineering proceeds at full speed. Be assured that the many castings and stampings necessary to hold the GT together will look handsome and high-tech. Aluminum-fabricator Mayflower will build the body panels using a super plastic-forming process and ship them to Ford Motor Company's Wixom, Michigan, assembly plant (Thunderbird, Lincoln LS). Engineers worked hard in the wind tunnel to smooth out the GT's shape, allowing for decent aerodynamics without deviating from the original design. The earliest race versions of the GT40 had terrible front-end lift at speed, but the new GT road car will have a fully enclosed underbody for aero, a small splitter in the front, side splitters, and a rear diffuser. The GT's door frames cut into the top, like the race car's (and unlike these development cars), but its windows will roll completely into the doors.
